New England Patriots Position Previews: Cornerbacks

Following another successful season on defense, the New England Patriots will enter the new year with a slightly different look in the secondary. The team signed ex-Bills corner-back Stephon Gilmore during the off-season which has created a nice tandem on the outside for the Patriots on defense. The team lost Logan Ryan to the Tennessee Titans during the off-season, but the team will still be set up to have a formidable group of talented players in the secondary.

Malcolm Butler:

After an eventful off-season that involved Malcolm Butler in trade talks with the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots will head into the new season with their top corner-back. Butler is still likely to be at the top of the team’s depth chart once again, but will pair up nicely with Gillmore’s physicality. As a physical corner-back himself, Butler is sure to continue pairing up against opposing teams’ top receivers. With ┬áthe acquisition of Gilmore, there will be less pressure on Butler to play against bigger receivers like Julio Jones, which should help in Butler’s performance as the year progresses. With four years of experience under his belt, Butler is set up for another strong season.
